All you need is a GPS, internet access, and the desire to have fun outdoors! Most smartphones have built-in GPS systems and apps that can be downloaded for geocaching. The best app that I have found for both Android and Apple phones is the "Geocaching" app. This app is in sync with Geocaching.com The app costs $9.99 but once you have the app you are able to access the locations of millions of geocaches that are scattered all over the world. This app will keep track of which ones you've found and will award you badges depending on what you have done. You can get badges by finding caches in different states and countries and sometimes for finding them in state and national parks. Within the apps you can offer feedback and updates on the cache to let others know if there is something wrong with it or if it is no longer there.
Geocaches are basically treasure chests of varying sizes. Some will be about the size of a pen and some can be big enough to climb into. Almost all of them will have a log for you to write your name in to tell everyone who finds it after you that you found it. Many of them have small gifts that are either left behind by the person who hid the cache or by others who have found the cache. I've even found disposable cameras left by the person who hid the cache for the finders to take selfies.
Many geocaches are hidden in plain sight. In order to search for these geocaches properly you need to be sure to be secretive about it as to not let others know its whereabouts. Don't tell people that it's there! If everyone knows that a cache is there it takes the fun away and also makes it vulnerable to people who might destroy it or do things to it without knowing what it is or why it is there. This is the reason they are so difficult to find. You aren't supposed to know about them unless you are a cacher yourself.
So how about it?! Would you like to go treasure hunting today?
